Suspect eyed as illegal immigrant

One of two men arrested in Monday’s shooting at a packed Lawrence nightclub told police there was an “arrest of alien” warrant out for him when the two allegedly gunned down four people during an apparent birthday party, killing one of them. It is unclear whether U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was aware that Fernando Guerrero Lara was a suspected illegal alien when he and Johan Saintclair allegedly walked into La Guira Restaurant shortly after midnight and opened fire. A “detainer has been placed on Fernando Guerrero-Lara,” said ICE spokesman Harold Ort, “and we are aware of Johan Manuel Saint...

New evidence undermines feds' case against Arizona

ICE investigators also interviewed top federal officials involved in illegal immigrant cases in Arizona. They found an "excellent" working relationship between the sheriff's office and the feds. ICE talked as well to federal prosecutors in Phoenix, who described the cases brought by Maricopa County as "high quality." In all, it's a quite positive assessment of an operation that just six months later would come under the Justice Department's microscope for alleged civil rights violations. It also lends indirect support to Arpaio's contention that the Justice Department investigation is politically motivated. A tidbit of information contained in other government documents released...

ICE Ignores Cos That Hire Illegal Workers

An Obama Administration program launched with great fanfare last summer to punish businesses that exploit illegal workers has given hundreds of flagrant offenders a free pass after Homeland Security audits determined they employed large numbers of undocumented immigrants.  It’s the one area of immigration enforcement that President Obama vows to pursue, penalizing companies that benefit from cheap illegal alien labor rather than workplace raids that lead to mass deportations. To fulfill the mission, the commander-in-chief launched a “bold, new audit initiative” last July to inspect businesses suspected of hiring large numbers of illegal workers. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)...
