Pike Fishing Tips

Pike Fishing Tips

Northern Pike have a snake like body, huge head and razor sharp teeth, they have a ferocious appearance and a reputation to go with it. It is not uncommon for pike to strike a perch, walleye or bass fighting on an anglers line.

Pike are found right across Canada and the northern United States and have even been introduced to spots as far south as Texas. In some areas of Alaska and Canada, pike are considered rough fish and fishermen kill them rather than return them to the water. But wherever they exist in Canada or the US they are popular with most anglers. They always put up a spirited fight and a great show for the lucky fisherman.

Lakes with shallow, weedy bays or connecting marshes are ideal for northern pike. Pike spawn soon after the ice goes out, begining when the water tempurature reaches 40F. They scatter their eggs onto dense vegetation in shallow bays and marshes. They refuse to bite just before and during spawning, but start again right after.

In most lakes and rivers the northern pike reigns supreme. They have been known to even feed on muskrats, mice, turtles, small ducks, and birds, but gerally their diet is small fish even their own kind. They will strike another fish half their own size, pike are persistant and will strike a lure over and over often until hooked.

Pike will snap at anything that will fit into their jaws and some things that don't fit. I have personaly seen large northern pike cruising slowly in a favorite spot of mine with their eyes and parts of their body out of the water, just waiting for a victum. That spot is on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, the largest freshwater island in the world. Also remember when fishing pike your fishing equipment needs to heavy duty, line, leader and lures.

In early spring some anglers like to use dead bait and believe that this out produces live bait. This is because they believe that a lot of bait fish die over the hard winter and the pike are scavenging on the dead fish.

Today most northerns over 20 pounds are taken in northern regions of Canada. The world-record northern pike, 46 pounds, 2 ounces, was caught in Sacandaga Reservoir, New York in 1940. However larger pike have been recorded in Scotland, Ireland and Germany.
